Quick Start: How to Play in 4 Steps

1

Look at the Grid

The 4ร—4 grid contains 16 letter dice. Your goal is to find hidden words by connecting adjacent letters.

2

Connect Letters

Link letters horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Each dice can only be used once per word.

3

Find Words

Words must be at least 3 letters long. Type or slide your finger across the letters to submit.

4

Beat the Clock

You have 3 minutes. After time runs out, your score is calculated. Longer words = more points.

Complete Boggle Rules

Game Setup

Boggle uses a 4ร—4 grid with 16 letter dice. Each dice has 6 faces with different letters. The dice are randomly arranged to create a unique board every game. At Puzzle Boggle, you can also choose from three difficulty levels: Easy (vowel-rich dice), Hard (standard dice), and Extreme (rare consonants).

Special Rule: The "Qu" Tile

One special dice face shows "Qu" instead of a single letter. This is because Q almost always appears with U in English words. The "Qu" tile counts as 2 letters but only occupies 1 dice position. For example, spelling "QUIET" uses the Qu tile plus I, E, T โ€” making it a 5-letter word worth 2 points instead of 1.

Valid Words

  • Minimum length: Words must be at least 3 letters long.
  • Adjacent letters: Letters must be touching โ€” horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
  • No reuse: Each letter dice can only be used once per word.
  • Any direction: Your word path can twist and turn in any direction.
  • Dictionary words only: Proper nouns, abbreviations, and hyphenated words are not allowed.

Boggle Scoring System

Points scale exponentially with word length. This incentivizes finding longer, more difficult words rather than many short ones. Here's the official scoring table:

Word LengthPointsExample
3 letters1 pointRUN, SEE, FUN
4 letters1 pointWORD, GAME, TIME
5 letters2 pointsBRAIN, QUIET, STORM
6 letters3 pointsLETTER, SOLVER, BRIGHT
7 letters5 pointsTHINKER, PATTERN, WHISPER
8+ letters11 pointsTHUNDER, CRYSTAL, THINKING

Pro tip: In competitive Boggle, any word found by multiple players scores zero for everyone. This encourages finding unique, longer words that others miss. When playing solo, you can try to beat your personal best โ€” see more Boggle tips and strategies.

Difficulty Levels

Our online Boggle offers three difficulty levels. Each changes the dice composition and time limit:

  • ๐ŸŒฑ Easy: High vowel ratio and common consonants. 5-minute timer. Perfect for beginners, kids, and casual players.
  • ๐ŸŽฏ Hard: Standard Boggle dice distribution matching the original Hasbro game. 3-minute timer. A balanced challenge for regular players.
  • ๐Ÿ’€ Extreme: Consonant-heavy dice with rare letters like X, Z, Q, J. 2-minute timer. Only for word game experts.

Big Boggle (5ร—5) & Super Big Boggle (6ร—6)

Official Boggle has bigger versions for experienced players. Big Boggle (also called Boggle Deluxe) uses a 5ร—5 grid โ€” 25 dice instead of 16. Super Big Boggle uses a 6ร—6 grid โ€” 36 dice and asks for words of 4+ letters instead of 3. Because more letters and longer minimum word lengths mean more possible words, these larger boards reward players with deep vocabularies.

The 5ร—5 version of Boggle is commonly called Big Boggle and is also known as Word Factory in some markets โ€” a 25-tile board where the hunt for long words is the real challenge. Play Word Factory online for free โ†’
