Boggle Tips & Strategy: How to Score Higher
Want to consistently score 50+ points in Boggle? These proven strategies will transform your word-finding skills — whether you're a beginner or advanced player.
1. Scan for Prefixes and Suffixes
This is the biggest score multiplier. Once you find a base word, immediately check if you can add common prefixes or suffixes:
- Prefixes: RE-, UN-, PRE-, DIS-, MIS-, OUT-, OVER-
- Suffixes: -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, -LY, -NESS, -TION, -MENT
Example: Found "THINK"? Check for THINK-ING (7 letters, 5 pts) or RE-THINK-ING (9 letters, 11 pts). This single trick can double your score.
2. Hunt the "Qu" First
The Qu tile is your best friend. It instantly unlocks high-scoring words:
- QUIET → QUIETLY (7 letters, 5 pts)
- QUESTION, QUICKLY, QUALITY
- Always scan the area around the Qu tile first when the game starts.
3. Think in Patterns, Not Letters
Don't scan randomly. Train your brain to see clusters:
- Consonant blends: ST, STR, SPR, SPL, SCR, THR, SHR
- Common endings: -IGHT, -OUND, -ATCH, -TION, -ABLE
- Vowel pairs: EA, OA, AI, OU, EE, OO
4. Work the Grid Like a Chessboard
Start from each corner and mentally sweep across. Corner letters connect to only 3 neighbors, making them easy entry points. Edge letters connect to 5 neighbors. Center letters connect to 8 neighbors — that's where long words hide.

Always check if a noun can become plural (-S, -ES) or if a verb can take another form (-S, -ED, -ING). But remember: each die can only be used once per word, so the suffix letter must be adjacent to your word's last letter.
6. Use the "Reverse" Trick
Found a word from left to right? Try reading the same path backwards. "TIME" backwards gives "EMIT" — a valid word you might have missed.
7. Prioritize Longer Words in the First Minute
Your brain is freshest at the start. Spend the first 60 seconds hunting for 5+ letter words. Then use the remaining 2 minutes to sweep for short words. One 7-letter word (5 pts) is worth five 3-letter words combined.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Tunnel vision: Staring at one corner too long. Keep scanning.
- Ignoring diagonals: Diagonal connections unlock the longest words.
- Skipping the Qu: Many players avoid it — don't.
- Forgetting short words: In the last 30 seconds, quickly sweep for 3-4 letter words to pad your score.
